Minutes with a Marvel: Heather Molzen

Heather Molzen has been a bright, bedazzled light in my life since the day I met her. I had the pleasure of hosting Heather at Washington State University when she was a high school senior, trying to convince her to sign her letter of intent and play basketball for the Cougs.

We became instant friends, sharing tall girl clothes (and problems!), accessories, recipes, and a passion for figuring out small ways to make people’s days. Heather took this last task and created a professional future for herself. After graduating in speech-language pathology, Heather played pro basketball in Europe, and eventually moved back to her hometown of San Diego (#caligirl). She used her skills and strengths to pursue a career in social work and now serves as a protective services worker.

Heather bravely walks into homes for the welfare of children, solving problems and offering hope to broken families. I know the list of Heather’s professional contributions and accomplishments is endless, and I could easily write on and on about Heather, but the thing that stands out most--in this present moment and world crisis--is that she’s still doing her job. Valiantly. The pandemic doesn’t push pause on abuse. There’s no social distancing for social workers.

As you think about health care workers on the front lines, increase your circle to raise up, thank, and pray for all who care for those in vulnerable situations. Thank you, Heather, for inspiring me always.

MINUTES WITH A MARVEL

Advice for dream seekers:

“Set small goals that get you to your big goals and prepare for changes/challenges along the way.”

Where do you get your energy/what motivates you?

“My passion for helping others, especially children.”

What women inspire you?

“My mom #1, my grandma, Kate Bethell née Benz, and RBG (Ruth Bader Ginsburg).”

Pie-in-the-sky dream or ambition?

“Dreams for me are just to make a difference in my community that I can look back and be proud of. Especially changing the public perception of CWS [Child Welfare Services] to a restorative agency and not one that is damaging to families.”

Go-to recipe?

“Tamale pie: taco meat, refried beans, shredded cheese and corn layered and topped with cornbread! Or choc. chip cookies.”
